Gift Giving and Giving-Giving!

A simple necklace can make your loved one feel so special this holiday season as you select the stone that represents the month in which they were born. Don't worry - you won't have to search high and low for which stones goes with what month - you can find it on my site! These every day necklaces can be purchased through me or on the lovely Mint Julep's online store. This necklace is so easy to pair with quite possibly any outfit you can wear this holiday season. Hooray for gift giving and thinking of others!

If the spirit of giving continues to move you at this time of year, consider checking out some of my fave Boston-area nonprofits, that improve our community by giving their energy to others.

- Building Materials Resource Center, Environmental
- MSPCA, Animal
- Boston Cares, All-things Volunteer

Now, back to my own daily ritual of thinking of how to adorn others with beautiful jewels!

Where in the web have you been?

My web developer and web designer are so fabulous!!! My new full e-commerce site is almost ready to be unveiled and just in time for the holidays :) Phew! You know I've been thinking of the holidays since July and crossing my fingers that it would be done in time.

I'm working my little fingers to the bone, trying to get all of my pieces (well, at least the ones I have pictures of) up and on this computer screen for the world to see. You'll be the first to know.

In joy,
Sara

Hello Again

Ahhh, what a beautiful day in Boston yesterday and I was fortunate to have had a show in the sunshine. Government Center was my home for a few hours on Wednesday, and like each show before, I continue to meet and mingle with some curious and wonderful people.

For the second time in my jewelry-making life, a little baby of gemstones and gold that I once created and nurtured in my hands found its way back to me and took me by surprise. The wonderful woman wearing it wandered up to my booth and commented on the similarity of my pieces to some she had recently purchased in a retail shop. When I glanced at her sparkly necklace, I realized why my pieces looked so familiar to her - it was my piece upon her neck and she had in fact purchased a few pieces of mine at Nomad! How cool. Now I've encountered my babies twice on their own in the real world; on an airplane when the gal was walking past me to her seat, and now at the market, where a lady with a love for jewelry was coming back for more without even realizing it.

The ins and outs of our paths continue to inspire me and the ways that we intersect (or not) make me feel so fortunate for this moment, this place, and these people around me. Have you told the people at your intersection how thankful you are to share this moment and place with them?

Tantalizing Turquoise

One of my favorite shops, Topaz, featured one of my newest designs on their blog! Check it out!

The Sleeping Beauty turquoise used in creating the piece featured is mined in Arizona, US, and is untreated (aka, naturally AMAZING!).

More fun facts From Wiki:

In many cultures of the Old and New Worlds, this gemstone has been esteemed for thousands of years as a holy stone, a bringer of good fortune or a talisman. It really does have the right to be called a 'gemstone of the peoples'. The oldest evidence for this claim was found in Ancient Egypt, where grave furnishings with turquoise inlay were discovered, dating from approximately 3000 BC. In the ancient Persian Empire, the sky-blue gemstones were earlier worn round the neck or wrist as protection against unnatural death. If they changed colour, the wearer was thought to have reason to fear the approach of doom. Meanwhile, it has been discovered that the turquoise certainly can change colour, but that this is not necessarily a sign of impending danger. The change can be caused by the light, or by a chemical reaction brought about by cosmetics, dust or the acidity of the skin.

Right now...

There are Tibetan Buddhist monks in a temple in the Himalayas endlessly reciting mantras for the cessation of your suffering and for the flourishing of your happiness.

Someone you haven’t met yet is already dreaming of adoring you.

Someone is writing a book that you will read in the next two years that will change how you look at life.

Nuns in the Alps are in endless vigil, praying for the Holy Spirit to alight the hearts of all of God’s children.

A farmer is looking at his organic crops and whispering, “nourish them.”

Someone wants to kiss you, to hold you, to make tea for you. Someone is willing to lend you money, wants to know what your favourite food is, and treat you to a movie. Someone in your orbit has something immensely valuable to give you — for free.

Something is being invented this year that will change how your generation lives, communicates, heals and passes on.

The next great song is being rehearsed.

Thousands of people are in yoga classes right now intentionally sending light out from their heart chakras and wrapping it around the earth.

Millions of children are assuming that everything is amazing and will always be that way.

Someone is in profound pain, and a few months from now, they’ll be thriving like never before. They just can’t see it from where they’re at.

Someone who is craving to be partnered, to be acknowledged, to ARRIVE, will get precisely what they want — and even more. And because that gift will be so fantastical in it’s reach and sweetness, it will quite magically alter their memory of angsty longing and render it all “So worth the wait.”

Someone has recently cracked open their joyous, genuine nature because they did the hard work of hauling years of oppression off of their psyche — this luminous juju is floating in the ether, and is accessible to you.

Someone just this second wished for world peace, in earnest.

Someone is fighting the fight so that you don’t have to.

Some civil servant is making sure that you get your mail, and your garbage is picked up, that the trains are running on time, and that you are generally safe. Someone is dedicating their days to protecting your civil liberties and clean drinking water.

Someone is regaining their sanity. Someone is coming back from the dead. Someone is genuinely forgiving the seemingly unforgivable. Someone is curing the incurable.

You. Me. Some. One. Now.

Dutch Tears!

On the day of the World Cup final, I showed my jewelry at the South End Open Market (SOWA) in the South End.

I was neighbor to the sweetest woman, Christine, who created and owns this absolutely wonderful company, Bite. I picked up 9 bags from her and plan to use them for the first time today when I pick up my CSA box from our super local Allandale Farm. If you're in the market for reusable produce bags, check out Christine's work... I love her eye for enviro-friendliness as well as cute patterns on her bags!

For the long day in the scorching heat, I was fortunate to have my good friend, Carla, helping me show and sell my wares. Carla happens to be Dutch. Carla happens to LOVE to talk to people.

Carla must have stopped about FOURTY people who were wearing any hint of orange (the Dutch national color) that day. Even folks who were wearing coral or salmon-colored outfits - "Are you rooting for the Dutch today?" She makes friends so easily and it is always a happy time when I'm with her.

Carla's happiness (which always of course, rubs off on me), sadly, wasn't enough for the Dutch National Team to come up with a win that day. What's so appropriate is that the block we were on in the South End invited the biggest rain storm that I've ever seen at an outdoor market!

The weirdest thing was that not more than 20 minutes after it passed, new market shoppers came by the booth, claiming that they had no idea that it was raining earlier. They all said that they were just a few streets away or they were just parking their car when the rain storm happened, and that it was clear skies by them. I have never heard of such a mystery (with the exception of any mystery I've seen on Robert Stack's creepy late 80s/early 90s television show).

Bye bye flip flop!

When the rain subsided, the market was as bustling as ever and it was yet another GREAT day at the SOWA market. I hope to your shining face very soon at my next show, July 28 from 11am - 3pm in Government Center, city of Boston-sponsored Arts on the Arcade!

Question of the day...

It's show season, which means meeting lots of new peeps and reconnecting with those I've known from long before!

I've seen Mother-Daughter combos, men who laugh uncontrollably at the sound of my voice (it isn't so bizarre, is it??), people that finally put a face to the name they've seen in shops they frequent, and now men who apparently think that I would have the right answer to...

"Do you carry any Bravado watches?"

Since I had no idea what that was but could only assume, I smiled and said that I was sorry, but no. Once I looked up the brand, I found a plethora of women's unmentionables, but then looked further and finally found the jewelry that I was suspected of carrying.

I'm not sure if it was the rustic display pieces I had or the faceted Peruvian Opal, moss aquamarine, garnet and gold that filled my booth set up, but I certainly would love to know how I came off as someone that would carry such a watch. Has anyone ever heard of these watches? Is this a sign that I should incorporate $1,000 titanium time pieces into my collection? Am I getting signals from the electronics power above that I should no longer rely on my iPhone for time-telling and go back to the days of middle school when we all used to wear watches?

I would like to think more about this topic, but I just don't have the time.

If I can make it there...

While spending some time with my sis and her man in NYC over the long weekend, here is what I accomplished!

Of course I also did ENORMOUS amounts of non-tourist sightseeing, but sometimes the sparkle of the gemstones is just as exciting to me than the stickiness of the city. It was especially sticky this past weekend in NYC, and it wasn't because I clogged my host's toilet (while home alone, of course!). Long story short, thank goodness for cell phones and boyfriends who answer them.

While with my sis, we found some wonderful vegetarian restaurants, ate the most amazing falafel and hummus (more than once), Afghani, and delicious mushrooms and seitan at this joint, which I've surprisingly been to before on a previous trip! I swear I saw perhaps the largest Whole Foods on the face of the planet and got lost briefly... just because I had nowhere to be and no plan of feeling an ounce of hurry the entire weekend.

I walked for hours on end, contemplating various forms of existence, capitalism, and the forming ouchies on my feet. My time in NYC was brief, but it was such a great way to relax and do no more than what was in front of me. A fabulous weekend and a wonderful opportunity to participate in the most basic necessities of life: sweat, eat, and buy gems.

Whitney Houston says Exhale....

The three weeks of craziness are over and I am feeling better than ever! These past weeks have been such a treat, meeting and mingling with shining personalities and incredible artists.

Beside me for the last few weeks, was Judith Meryl, a sister duo from Brookline, MA and NJ, the wonderful and friendly ladies of Topaz, Jenn Mason, Hanne Bernstein, and all of the incredible Boston-area artists that you can find throughout the summer at the South End Open Market. The vibrancy and energy came in part because of Boston's recent dosage of sunlight and low humidity, but mostly was a result of a collective passion for creation and art. These groups that I am fortunate enough to be a small part of have truly taken on lives of their owns, showing event attendees that our creation is our oxygen... it's how we need to spend our days so that we don't go crazy.

On 5/1 and 5/2, I took part in Brookline Open Studios, which was a beautiful setting in the beautiful Jenn Mason's home. We picked up our fresh fruit, cut it for all of our guests to enjoy, set up our artwork and sat back and relaxed as hundreds of Open Studios guests came by to view and shop. Little did we know, the second day of Open Studios would prove to be a bit different as Boston experienced a boil-water alert due to a main break in Weston, only miles away. Our lemonade wasn't so safe anymore, so we boiled all of the tap water and chilled it, allowing for the tart lemons to settle in and get back to a safe state. No one became sick and it turns out most of the water was safe to drink anyway, but it was a valuable lesson in taking simple resources for granted and participating in boil water practices that many people in this world still take part in. Water and contaminants aside, the weekend was full of happiness and friends, and as far as my jewelry went, I had a very positive response.

Jenn, her daughter Becky, and Hanne.

The following weekend included a highly-anticipated second trunk show at one of my favorite retailers, Topaz. Who wouldn't adore this boutique in Harvard Square? I'm there nearly every other week, so I guess I'm a little biased :) A tea party with gourmet finger foods and a huge variety of fruit drinks were served and jewelry was on the agenda. It was so fun. Jewelry was shown and discussed, and dressing up attendees became a fun part of the evening as we spent hours of conversation on helping jewelry-lovers pick out the right piece. By the end of the night, when we had all had our fill of tea and sweets, it was only appropriate to for Nina, Stasia, and I to open a bottle of wine and recount the fun that we had just had while cleaning up.

Stasia, Nina, Meagan and Me.

Who is that girl? :)

Work & Play

Now that the Topaz trunk show brought my spirits even higher, it was time for the true test of endurance, the South End Open Market. Setting up at 7am and breaking down at 5pm, this show takes an abundance of energy and adrenaline, but is never met without equal amounts of fun and surprise. Two days of 140+ artists set up in the South End of Boston, one of the most vibrant art communities around. Nestled in between high rises and feet away from the Back Bay, this market brings so many characters that always bring a belly-chuckle and a good time. This market requires that you have fun and that is what we had.

My neighbors were great and I saw my most favorite vendors that I see season after season, including Stonehouse Studio, The Pebble Collection, Becky OH, Amy Casher, and my newest friend, Sarah Anne DiNardo. We made a trade and I picked out one of her amazing masking tape art pieces! The piece is in the sea of gorgeousness shown in this shot!

My own pals came to visit and I was shocked at how they all seemed to show up at the same time - all to relieve me for a bathroom break! I guess that is the ultimate form of theft protection: 6 people manning a 10'x10' booth. Don't even think about putting that bracelet in your pocket, sweetheart! Just kidding, no theft was had but it was probably because my friends are all really mean looking ;-). My friends are the best!

Josh, Engie, Lindsay and Sean :)

If we're doing this, who is watching the table?

Phew. These three weeks have been what I've been looking forward to for so long, and now that they are finally over, I can only look ahead to the next shows, events and get togethers. When all is accounted for, the people that I meet at these events are by far the best part of my job. The smiles, the hugs, the gratitude for what we have and what we are trying to accomplish in our own professional and artistic lives - it's really something to celebrate and take note of.

Thank you for those who came out. To those I just met, I am really looking forward to seeing more of your work and of course more face time with you.

Until next time, In Joy!

30 Days

What an incredible show! I just saw one of the many shows in the series, so I'm making a huge assumption, but I just watched the episode of living among Muslims for 30 days... breath taking. I was in tears at several points during the show, reflecting on our incredible and everlasting need for compassion, aproaching each other as one of our own and recognizing similarities instead of differences. If I had a 'like' button for the topic of compassion, I'd use it right now. Compassion is the most important trait in a person to me.

If I were to live in a different life than my own for 30 days, what would I do? What would YOU do? I wouldn't want to stop at just one project, so let's just pretend the list wouldn't stop at the following few choices of mine. I would live without sight, live without sound, live in a wheelchair, be an asthmatic, and live without electricity. Simple, but it's easy to take these things for granted. The word admiration doesn't fully express what I have for folks who are not able to stop this way of living after 30 days. I am truly inspired by those who live with the things that most neglect thinking of living without.

While in a ridiculously busy Trader Joe's today, I witnessed a TJ's employee shopping alongside, list in hand, a man with no sight. The communication between the two of them was quite amazing, especially in such a crowded and small-aisled space. One could sense the pride of this TJ's employee while politely stepping through the crowd and maneuvering himself around others to get to this man's groceries. I loved overhearing their conversation. Hummus came up a few times - don't forget the hummus, the man said. Being witness to this reminded me of the many times I helped a blind woman pick out jewelry... for herself. Her name was Marcia and she often shopped for jewelry, and wore a lot of it as well. Her favorite word was opalescence, and this must have been a benchmark description that she knew looked great on her, because nearly every piece I would hand her to fondle, she would ask about its opalescence. I would describe the shape and color, referring to the color not just by its name but also by comparing it to objects, nature, and temperature. She would often pick out and speak of other traits about a piece that I wouldn't have noticed, just by feeling it. It was incredible! I was so impressed with her style of shopping and always felt so fortunate to be a part of her discovery.

Here is to living with recognition and appreciation for what we have. In this moment, everything I need is right here in front of me.. and I am SO thankful.

Delicious Consumption

My newest purchase, The Vegan Table by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau... I've been gobbling up all of her podcasts via iTunes, Vegetarian Food for Thought, for 2-3 months now. I'm constantly full of inspiration because of this kind woman and I'm so ecstatic to get cooking with her meat, dairy and egg-free recipes in my mitts. I'm gonna be the hostest with the mostest and you're invited to dinner... I'll make you realize just how cool vegetables can be!

One of the many perty recipes in her book can get you this, without any animal products:

Purchasing this book today was a twofer... if you ever make it to Manchester, Vermont, I highly recommend you visit one of the most outstanding independent bookstores in the country, Northshire Bookstore (although I'm of course partial to Powell's, my hometown's proud baby!). Ahhhh, you could spend every waking minute here and still be excited about reading. This is the type of place that you will buy books in excess and not think twice about where you will put these books or how many people you'll have to ask to carry them for you once you move apartments.

These purchases were my reward for finishing up *most* of my outstanding paperwork while here in Vermont this weekend, and making some great new contacts here in this gorgeous state. Who can love you better than YOU? Reward yourself for some of your own good deeds and don't you think twice about it!

Read, cook, pat yourself on the back.

In joy!

Whatever you are fighting, know that You Will Overcome

And then you'll see a whale!

Oh, hello sunshine!

How are you, friend?

Must tell you before I forget - now that the crazy rain has subsided, go out and buy yourself this umbrella, IMMEDIATELY. You have time before the next monsoon!

I'm headed to Vermont today for a long weekend of music, organization, tidying up loose biz ends, and *maybe* some relaxation!! I've been go go go for the last two months or so, organizing a few big projects and also taking care of the household goodness while my man was recording albums with two of the bands he is in. I'm so excited to be in the wide open VT to enjoy this much-needed sunshine that we've been deprived of as of late.

A long-time outstanding project for me has been my website... no, not that one that forwards you to my Etsy page (which is great, but not where I want to be in the long run). The REAL one! I've met a fabulous web designer through a friend that will take my bare bones site (still not public) to the gorgeousness that I know it can be. We have set a deadline for May 1, though May 15 is our absolute last date that we'll have it all complete. That's just the design, then there is the data entry and picture uploading... that may take additional time since I'll be the only one doing it and although it's easy, isn't the most time-efficient CMS. You have to write tons of different little bits and thingamabobs, etc. just to post one item. However, at least a beautiful new site will be up and I will be one step closer to having my complete package in order! I'm VERY pumped about this and cannot wait to see the end result.

My pieces continue to sell well in the shops that I consistently sell to and I'm always sending new packages of pieces. I encourage you to get into these shops to check out my jewels! If I were you, I would turn off your computer immediately, no better yet - just leave the room right now and don't even think about turning the stove off and run out to one or more of the following delights: Topaz, Nomad, Koko, or Mint Julep... go, why haven't you left yet? Quit reading!

My booth set up has changed, thanks in large part to a very talented friend, Shaun Newell, that knows how to measure, use a level, work a saw, drill holes, you know... all the important stuff in life! He's fantastic if you ever need a good handyman. It's going to be beautiful and is set up right behind me, blocking our second computer and my clothing closet... I just bought new necks in beige so that my jewels can really stand out much more than on black necks (which I hated!!). The actual mini-walls and shelves that he built are all reused items - none new... they've all come from homes that have been been either renovated or deconstructed. These are all parts that have once been in someone else's home. I love that!

Keeps with my love of weathered objects and is right in line with my sometimes unhealthy love for recycling and reusing :) If you'd like to reuse building materials, check out the Building Materials Resource Center in Roxbury, MA.

I have a few other good projects up my sleeve that I'll reveal at some point in the near future, but wanted to send a shout out to the blogosphere because it's been so dang long since I've posted. I need to quit apologizing for this and just let it be what it's going to be, because I have simply accepted the fact that I will write when I feel like it and not force anything! Hooray! I'm staying true to myself and that is that :)

Have an excellent day and go buy that umbrella on your way to check out my new schtuff at the shops! Eat your veggies!
